Introduction to Thesis & Project Presentation
A thesis or project presentation is a structured oral presentation in which a student communicates the key aspects of their research or practical project to a panel of examiners, supervisors, and other relevant audiences. It is not expected to reproduce the entire thesis or project report. Rather, the presentation should summarise the problem, purpose, methodology, major findings, contribution, and conclusions in a clear and convincing manner.
For undergraduate Communication Design/Visual Communication Design projects, the presentation should combine the research component with the design/practical component. Students should therefore demonstrate not only what they investigated, but also how the research informed their creative decisions, design process, outcomes, and evaluation.
Purpose of the Presentation
A good thesis/project presentation should enable the panel to quickly understand:
- What problem was investigated?
- Why is the problem important?
- What were the objectives or research questions?
- How was the study/project conducted?
- What were the major findings or outcomes?
- How were the findings translated into the project/design?
- What contribution does the work make?
- What are the key conclusions and recommendations?
Thesis Presentation
- Emphasises research and academic argument
- Focuses heavily on methodology and findings
- Literature and theoretical framework are important
- Findings are primarily research-based
- Contribution is often theoretical/empirical
- Evidence and analysis are central
Project Presentation
- Emphasises research and practical output
- Focuses heavily on design/development process
- Related works, precedents and design rationale are important
- Outcomes may include visual, physical, digital or media artefacts
- Contribution may be creative, practical, methodological or social
- Visual demonstration and evaluation are central
