KNUST: A Rising Powerhouse in Global Packaging Design
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has recently garnered international acclaim for its remarkable achievements in packaging design. In a stunning display of creativity and technical prowess, KNUST's team swept four awards at the prestigious WorldStar Student Packaging Awards. This event, known for celebrating the best in packaging design from students worldwide, saw KNUST emerging as a rising powerhouse in global packaging design. The awards underscore the KNUST Team’s ability to develop innovative and practical packaging solutions that meet global standards.
The university’s successes have not only brought global recognition but also highlighted Ghana as an emerging leader in innovative packaging solutions.
Sweeping Four WorldStar Student Packaging Awards
At the prestigious WorldStar Global Packaging Awards ceremony on the evening of 15th June, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand, held during the 31st Propak Asia Packaging and Processing Exhibition, KNUST’s teams showcased exceptional creativity and technical expertise, securing four coveted awards. This esteemed competition is the premier platform for celebrating outstanding packaging design, encouraging and showcasing innovative ideas from around the globe.
The KNUST team, comprising Edna Akyaa Amo-Duah (BA Communication Design), Barthelomew Nyarko (BA Communication Design), and Maxine Naa Adoley Allotey-Quist (BSc Packaging Technology), emerged as the Overall Winner Gold Award recipients in the Student category. The team’s mentors, Prof. Kojo Agyapong Afrifah and Dr. Adam Rahman, from the Departments of Wood Science and Technology and Communication Design, respectively, were filled with immense joy. The KNUST team also clinched the Gold Medal for Best Food Packaging, Silver for Sustainable Packaging, and Bronze for Packaging that Saves Food. The World Packaging Organisation (WPO), Vice President for Education, Mr. Kofi Essuman, presented the medals to Miss Amo-Duah.
The competition attracted 253 entries from 25 countries, with 137 selected as finalists. Each entry was rigorously judged by a global panel from 49 countries. KNUST’s entry, Alpha Biopac, stood out among the rest. This eco-friendly and sustainable box, crafted from water hyacinth fibreboard, is designed to facilitate the handling, storage, and transportation of smoked fish. Their project stood out among global competitors for its innovative approach and potential impact on the packaging industry.
